Mobile Unit to raise awareness on cancer with Sports Unity’s support

The Cancer Research and Innovation Hub Malta (CRIHM) has launched a Mobile Unit aimed at raising awareness and providing education on cancer prevention across Malta and Gozo. The Mobile Unit will provide information on screening, prevention, and healthy living while also supporting cancer research efforts in Malta, complementing existing initiatives and resources to further strengthen the fight against cancer.

The initiative was officially unveiled by Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research, and Innovation, Hon. Keith Azzopardi Tanti, who emphasised the critical role of research and early detection in the battle against cancer. The idea of the Mobile Unit to carry out such activities had originally been proposed by Ħamrun Ħanin earlier last year.

Ian Debattista, Ħamrun Ħanin Chairman, said: “This project is a tangible example of what we believe in, that sport can contribute towards our society. Through Sports Unity, Ħamrun Ħanin sought to bring over other clubs in this project, showing how in unity there is strength. We take pride that the first major initiative of this collaborative effort is for a cause that truly matters—contributing to the fight against cancer.”

“Cancer remains a global challenge that we continue to face, and that is why we must keep investing in prevention, screening, and treatment. Through this Mobile Unit, we will be delivering information directly to people, encouraging them to take action for their health,” Parliamentary Secretary Azzopardi Tanti said.

Chairman of CRIHM Professor Christian Scerri spoke of the vital role of this initiative. “Research shows that when cancer is detected at an early stage, survival rates increase significantly. This Mobile Unit will serve as an educational platform to encourage more people to take proactive steps for their health. It is another step toward innovative efforts that can save lives,” Scerri said.

The initiative is being carried out in collaboration with Ħamrun Ħanin, which is supporting the Mobile Unit in reaching as many people as possible within the community through their Sports Unity project. A first major activity towards this objective, a Gala Night which brought together Premier League, Challenge League, veterans and women’s clubs, was hosted by Sports Unity last November. The Mobile Unit will provide information on screening, healthy lifestyles, and prevention, while supporting Malta’s ongoing efforts in cancer research and public health awareness. Through partnerships with local organisations, the initiative ensures that vital information reaches as many people as possible, ultimately fostering a healthier and more informed
