Ħamrun Ħanin Launches Fund Raising Initiative in Support of Special Olympics Malta

Ħamrun Ħanin, the social arm of Ħamrun Spartans FC, has officially launched the third edition of its flagship annual initiative, this year in collaboration with Special Olympics Malta, with the aim of raising funds to support inclusive sport.

Building on the success of previous years, the initiative continues to reflect the organisation’s commitment to creating a lasting social impact. The first edition saw funds raised for the development of a Multi-Sensory Room in Ħamrun, while last year’s campaign supported the Malta Guide Dogs Foundation in the purchase of a guide dog, with the process currently underway.

Addressing a press conference, Chairman Ian Debattista explained that this year’s initiative was selected following careful consideration of several proposals. “We were inspired by the meaningful work carried out by Special Olympics Malta with children and young people. Sport lies at the heart of both organisations, and this collaboration reflects our shared values and vision,” he said.

The campaign will culminate during Ħamrun Spartans’ final league match against Valletta FC, where the team will once again wear a specially designed limited-edition jersey. These match-worn shirts, signed by the players, will be auctioned, with all proceeds going towards the cause. Supporters will also have the opportunity to purchase commemorative t-shirts and mugs, with funds contributing towards the purchase of a much-needed transport van for Special Olympics Malta athletes.

The campaign also aims to raise awareness about the important work of Special Olympics Malta, ensuring that its impact extends well beyond the duration of the initiative.

Ħamrun Spartans Committee Member Victor Cassar emphasised that the Club measures success not only on the pitch and commercially, but also through its social contribution. “We remain firmly rooted in our community. This initiative reflects of our belief that football can and should serve as a platform for positive change,” he said. Team captain Henry Bonello highlighted the players’ commitment to the cause, noting that despite a demanding season, the squad remains dedicated to giving back. He encouraged supporters to take part and contribute to the initiative.

Anna Calleja, National Director of Special Olympics Malta, added thatsport plays a crucial role in empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities by helping them build confidence, independence and a sense of belonging. She noted that support from initiatives such as this goes beyond financial assistance, as it enables Special Olympics Malta to expand its programmes, reach more athletes and create opportunities for them to showcase their abilities both locally and internationally.

“Behind every athlete there is a story of determination and courage, and that continued community support sends a powerful message that these athletes are valued, supported and fully included in society”, she concluded.
