Hamrun Ħanin celebrates World Down Syndrome Day with a week of Inclusive Activities
This year, Hamrun Ħanin and Hamrun Spartans Football Club marked World Down Syndrome Day (March 21) with a series of heartwarming and inclusive activities, in collaboration with the Down Syndrome Association Malta. The initiative, which ran throughout the week, was designed to celebrate and promote the importance of inclusion, fun, and community spirit, with an emphasis on bringing people together through football and sport.
The initiative kicked off with an exciting training session at the Hamrun Spartans Football Club, where several sport-loving persons with Down Syndrome had the unique opportunity to join the senior Hamrun Spartans team on the pitch. The session was filled with laughter, teamwork, and genuine fun, embodying the spirit of inclusivity that the club stands for. It was a moment where participants, whether players or guests, came together simply to enjoy the time, proving that football truly is a universal language that unites us all.
Participants also had a chance to work on their fitness at 24/7 Gym, where they enjoyed some quality time together, engaging in fun activities and promoting physical fitness in an inclusive environment. The gym session was another opportunity for people with Down syndrome to feel empowered, showing that everyone, regardless of their abilities, can lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
The highlight of the week came just before the Hamrun Spartans’ Premier League match against Sliema Wanderers. In a display of inclusivity, the participants took to the field once again, joining the Spartans’ senior players, lead by captain Steve Borg, as they took to the pitch for this game. It was an emotional and unifying moment, reinforcing the message that football is a sport for everyone.
Throughout the week, the collaboration between Hamrun Ħanin, Hamrun Spartans, and the Down Syndrome Association Malta was a reminder of how sport can be a powerful tool for breaking down barriers and fostering inclusivity. The activities allowed individuals with Down syndrome to feel part of the football community, not just as spectators, but as active participants. The event proved that, together, we can build a more inclusive society where everyone has the opportunity to play, grow, and thrive.
